Autocross, sometimes known as Solo, or Slalom racing, has a long history. The sport is very popular on a national scale, with at least seven clubs across the state of Oregon holding these events. The names may have changed but the sport hasn’t. So, here’s how it works.

The club or organization putting on the event sets up a course made of traffic cones, in a parking lot or other expanse of asphalt. Then each competitor, one at a time, tests their skills on the course, moving through the course as fast as they can without hitting any of the cones or going off course. This type of racing includes all skill levels, from the novice to the dedicated competitor.

Some cars are the same ones used to get the groceries and others are “trailer queens”, the ones that are so specially built they’re no longer legal on the public roads, and everything in between.

There are many classes that define different types of cars and the degrees of modification allowed to those cars. There is a lady’s class for those who want it.

You can share your car with a friend or a family member. If you are lucky, you may have a friend willing to share their car with you.

This is a lively sport at relatively low speeds and fun beyond compare.
